Bowden Park, located in Palo Alto, California was Robert Royson's follow up effort to the very successful Mitchell Park. With this project he continued to explore complex ground plane geometries. The rectangular patterns created by various paving materials, color planting, and turf are evocative of the paintings of Piet Mondrian and recall his early residentail work, notably the 1948 Chinn Garden. Subtle elevation changes add interest to the otherwise flat sight. The amenities within the park: whimsical play elements, free standing screens, and space defining fences as well as benches and light fixtures were all designed by Royston to enhance the visitor's experience of the park. |
