A native of the San Francisco Bay Area, Robert Royston attended the University of California Berkeley, graduating with a landscape architecture degree in 1940. He began his career in the office of Thomas Church while still a student.
After military service in World War II, he returned to the Bay Area in 1945 and formed the firm Eckbo, Royston, & Williams with partners Garrett Eckbo and Ed Williams. Growing and changing with the profession, this firm was followed by Royston Hanamoto & Mayes in 1958, Royston Hanamoto Mayes & Beck 1962, Royston Hanamoto Beck & Abey 1967, and finally Royston Hanamoto Alley & Abey in 1979. Mr. Royston has recieved numerous awards and recognition for his work, including the ASLA medal in 1989. This is the highest honor bestowed by the American Society of Landscape Architects. He is an emeritus principal at Royston Hanamoto Alley & Abey and is active on a variety of projects. He is also currently functioning as a consultant to the City of Palo Alto California on the renovation of Mitchell Park. |
