lemann garden - 1955

Throughout his career Robert Royston has been a teacher as well as a practitioner. He has lectured and taught at many prominent design schools, inlcuding Louisiana State University. The Lemann Garden came about as a result of a friendship developed while he was associated with LSU and Tulane University.

Two large Live Oaks - one in the front of the house and one at the rear define the spatial boundaries of the Lemann garden. A low wall near the Oak in the back garden follows the curve dicated by a large overhanging limb.

Royston used a local design vocabulary in this garden, employing brick for paving and walls where he normally would have been inclined to concrete or wood. This gives it a more fomral feeling than is typical of his west coast projects.
