pixie place - 1956
Pixie Place, later called Pixie Park, was a pro bono project done by Robert Royston for the American Association of University Women during the mid ninteen fifties. The membership of this group included many young mothers who were interested in creating a playground specifically designed for the needs of toddlers and preschool children. Prior to the creation of Pixie Place, there was no playground in the area that was appropriate for very young children. Funded by private domnations and built in part by volunteers, this playground follows in the spirit of the employee built recreation facilities at the Standard Oil Rod and Gun Club and the community sponsored playgrounds of Mitchell and Krusi Parks and reflects the communitarian values that characterize much of Royston's work. The forms and elements that create the playground are classically Royston, including organic forms for planting and play areas, long linear trellis structures, screen fencing, and innovative play structures.
