| richardson garden - 1952 to 1957
This garden was designed and executed in three phases. In 1952, an initial garden was created on the west side of the house. A swimming pool, terrace, and dressing room was added in 1955. The addition of a umbrella like shade structure completed the garden in 1957. |

The Richardson garden is an excellent case study for a number of the design elements that characterize the mid-century gardens designed by Robert Royston.
The first phase of the garden included free standing screens to create dynamic vertical planes. Strong free-form ground patterns composed of both planting and pavement are found thoughout the garden. The overhead plane is articulated by means of trellis work on the south side of the house. Phase 2 of the project included the addition of a swimming pool, pool house, and terrace. The umbrella shade structure was added in the third phase of the garden which was completed in 1957. |
