Who am I and why have I spent the time and energy to put this site together?
I am a designer and writer who is fascinated by the exuberance and elegance of good mid-century design. (Good mid-century design, not all mid-century design!). The furniture created by Charles & Ray Eames has these qualities, so does the architetcure of Richard Neutra or Rudolph Schindler. I believe that the landscape architecture of this period was something fundamentally new and dynamic. The work of Robert Royston was some of the best being done at that time. Because landscape is by its very nature constantly changing, many of the landscapes created during the post war years are already lost to us. The Herman Miller furniture company can reissue Eames designs, but the gardens of the period cannot be so easily reproduced. It is my hope that the glimpses I have provided here might increase understanding and appreciation of those modern landscapes that remain. I want to express my thanks to Royston Hanamoto Alley and Abey. It is through them that I have had the good fortune of both contact with Mr. Royston and access to the firm's archives. |
